Our ancestor Lelia May Feild was born in Archie, Missouri, in January 1905. She has the distinction of being the first member of our family to attend the University of Missouri, at a time when it was uncommon for women to even go to college. She grew up in rural Missouri and met her husband, Louis Garland, in high school and they were married in 1931.

During her time at Mizzou, Lelia was an active member of Pi Lambda Theta (established 1911), an honor society for students pursuing careers in education, as well as the competitive swim team known as the Missouri Mermaids. She was also a member of the Women’s Athletic Association, and as a senior, appeared on stage in the WAA’s annual vaudville performance.
Lelia graduated in 1929 with a degree in Education and subsequently became an elementary school teacher.
