Welcome to the Fediverse

Welcome to the Fediverse

The internet has so much potential for sharing knowledge and connecting people with similar interests. I can remember what the early internet was like, and as a result, I have been quite disappointed with what it has become. Social media has become toxic in so many ways, and it has largely destroyed what the internet promised to be in those early days. But people don’t have to settle for this inferior product – there are alternatives. The Fediverse, as it has come to be known, is an entire constellation of social media services that provide all of the same potential for valuable connections.

While it is true that these services tend to lack strong content moderation, the well-known platforms provided by the “big tech” industry have plenty of issues in this area as well. And as most people know by now, if an online service is free, it means that you, the user, are the product. Because we are not comfortable with the ethics of that business model, the Pipes Family Foundation has chosen the Fediverse to engage with the public, and we encourage everyone else to explore this option as well.

We’re not sure what topics we may choose to post about, but by using open-source, federated software, we can be certain about the ownership of our content far into the future, and avoid any of the drawbacks that come from centralized ownership of the “algorithm.” This is more important to us than being seen on a popular site, or “going viral.” So, if you’d like to follow us, head on over to our new server at social.pipes.family.
